'Strength Totem -Josh’ is part of the Strength Totem series which reference local architecture and abstracted symbols as personal ‘totems’. The totems reflect challenges I face as a single mother, issues my children conquer; and the ordeal of representing myself and my children in the Family Law Court system. Symbols in the Strength Totems reflect the solace and support I found in the local community. The totems are made of abstracted symbols that include diverse references to the Art Deco buildings of Ainslie School, Dr Seuss books, targets, cultural symbols for strength and family; and a handbag of Nanna’s (Nanna was also a single mother). I use bright colours and glittered perspex as material symbols of hope to create the relief totems. Strength Totem Josh is a whimsical anthropomorphic tribute to my son who has faced many challenges yet is a complete delight. Through adversity we find ways to grow and we gain strength- what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
